PlanB Aviary at Rivera: Education Through Nature
Overview
PlanB has designed and built an interactive aviary within Rivera Outbound & Edutainment Park in Bogor as part of its commitment to environmental education and biodiversity awareness. The aviary is more than an attraction—it serves as an open-air learning space where children and families can discover the interconnected wonders of birds, bees, and ancient petrified wood.
Purpose and Vision
The aviary was conceived to inspire curiosity and a deeper understanding of Indonesia’s natural heritage. It introduces visitors, particularly young learners, to key ecological concepts such as pollination, avian biodiversity, and geological history through hands-on observation and storytelling.
By showcasing:
- Native and exotic bird species in a safe, semi-natural environment;
- Stingless bees (Trigona) through a transparent observation hive;
- And petrified wood specimens from Indonesia’s mineral-rich landscapes—
the aviary creates an integrated narrative about life, transformation, and ecosystems across time.
Educational Features
The aviary is used to:
- Conduct interactive school group sessions on birds and pollinators;
- Illustrate the importance of habitat protection and reforestation;
- Highlight the role of bees in sustainable agriculture;
- And foster appreciation for Indonesia’s fossil heritage through tactile engagement with millions-year-old wood turned to stone.
Collaboration with Rivera
PlanB continues to support Rivera in managing and maintaining the aviary. This includes:
- Training Rivera’s education staff on the biology of species exhibited;
- Periodic updates to exhibit content;
- And the inclusion of local community partners, artists, and craftspeople in designing educational materials.
This collaboration is part of PlanB’s broader mission to bridge sustainability, education, and inclusive development.
